  72. The newsgroups line for s.s.f-a is:

  74. soc.support.fat-acceptance      Self-acceptance for fat people.  No diet talk.

  78. soc.support.fat-acceptance provides a supportive forum for the discussion
  79. of the personal and political goals of fat-acceptance and other topics
  80. relevent to being fat.

  97. A2)    How did s.s.f-a start?
  98.  
  99. This group developed from alt.support.big-folks.  There was a brief
  100. suggestion, in early '94, that all the alt.support groups might move
  101. over to misc.support.  (Then we'd be in the big seven, and have wider
  102. distribution and so forth.)  At that time, the consensus on a.s.b-f
  103. was to change the group's name to misc.support.fat-acceptance.  It was
  104. felt that this name would be less confusing and more descriptive.  For
  105. reasons unknown, the move to misc fizzled.  So we're still here.
  106.  
  107. In September '94, Wendy Betts (web@armory.com) began work on an RFD
  108. for soc.support.fat-acceptance.  (The soc.support hierarchy was
  109. established since the last round of discussions.)  A Call For Votes
  110. was issued on November 14, 1994, and the group passed 163:49.  The
  111. group was newgrouped on December 22, 1994.

  115. A3)    What do the acronyms mean?
  116.  
  117. BBW        Big Beautiful Woman
  118. BBM        Big Beautiful Man
  119. bear        a man who is cuddly, furry, stocky, and/or bearded;
  120.         most often used by and about gay men
  121. FA        Fat Admirer, person who prefers a fat sexual/romantic
  122.         partner
  123. NAAFA        National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance
  124. mid-size    refers to people who are in the mid-range.
  125.         For women, this means they wear U.S. dress size
  126.         16W-26W.  
  127. super-size     refers to people who are very large.
  128.         For women, this means they wear U.S. dress size 28W
  129.         and up.  This division between mid-size and super-size
  130.         for women seems to arise from the face that most
  131.         retail clothing sizes for women stop at U.S. 26W.

  135. A4)     What are some related newsgroups?
  136.  
  137. alt.sex.fat is a group for people who want to discuss issues involved
  138. in sex with fat people.  It was formed in early '94 so that a.s.b-f
  139. could stay more or less G (or PG) rated.
  140.  
  141. alt.sex.fetish.fa is a group for fat admirers.  This group is mostly
  142. dead.  (The word "fetish" in the title rubs many FAs the wrong way,
  143. does nothing to promote a positive image of FAs, and implies a
  144. separation between sex and romance that doesn't exist for many FAs.)
  145. alt.sex.fat has taken over most of the traffic.
  146.  
  147. alt.support.big-folks is another group for discussing size-acceptance
  148. and issues affecting large people.  
  149.  
  150. alt.support.diet is a group for people who want support and discussion
  151. of dieting and other weight loss methods.  Regular posters tend not to
  152. be very fat.  This is a good place to take weight loss questions and
  153. discussions.
  154.  
  155. alt.support.obesity is a group for people who are 100 pounds (or more)
  156. overweight and who want support and discussion of dieting and other
  157. weight loss methods appropriate for very fat people.  The group is
  158. moderated by Mark Mitchum (markm@unm.edu).  This is another good
  159. place to take weight loss questions and discussions.

  161. alt.personals.big-folks and alt.personals.fat are groups for personal
  162. ads by big folks or looking for big folks.  These groups were formed
  163. in July '94 to get personal ads out of a.s.b-f, to provide an easy way
  164. for fat people and fat admirers to get in touch with one another, and
  165. so that fat people would not have to wade through personal ads that
  166. specify that only slender people should respond.
